Message from WiFA Management: Emma Neuman
Are you struggling to find that inner voice to motivate you to be more active? Perhaps during the past 18 months you have found yourself into a routine that involves less exercise and more excuses not to keep fit? Sports clubs have been erratically rescheduling games for teams while gyms have been open and shut overnight. If you have been feeling the monotonous humdrum, you are not alone. The pandemic has been challenging in more ways than one but now is the time to start focusing on a new approach to life.

This September, WiFA invites you to participate in our signature fitness challenge in support of RUN (see details below). So, if the above words echo true to yourself, read on to see how you can change this up and do well for your health, your community, your company, and your colleagues.

RUN is a Hong Kong-based non-profit that supports vulnerable refugees to rebuild their mental and physical strength, unite across differences as a community, and nurture self-reliance for a more hopeful future. With sports as the springboard and education as the foundation, they work towards a resilient and empowered refugee community in Hong Kong and beyond.

Alarmingly:
● There are ~12,000 asylum seekers in Hong Kong
● Only 0.52% of asylum seekers have their claims recognised - this is one of the lowest approval rates in the developed world
● Refugees and asylum seekers are given a small monthly allowance of HK$1,200 in food vouchers and HK$1,500 for rent
● Refugees and asylum seekers have no right to work in Hong Kong
If you do the basic math, you will understand what the above figures mean. HK$1,200 for food per month works out to a coffee a day at Starbucks.

RUN empowers refugees to build a new life of safety, dignity, and self-reliance. Beyond meeting the immediate needs of their participants, RUN aims to empower them to build a new life of safety, dignity, and self-reliance. This means supporting their participants to advance education and develop professionally, facilitating local employment opportunities and learning business skills, and exploring long-term solutions to leave their life of limbo in Hong Kong and start a new life abroad.

It is through RUN’s programmes and joint fundraising efforts that drive their cause further forward. As an association committed to be change makers and leaders in the community, WiFA is supporting RUN in a fitness event as we see this as an opportunity to raise funds through togetherness and sharing of experiences. To give you even more motivation and reason to be part of this fantastic event, you will be pleased to know how easy it is to join the challenge.

It takes less than five minutes to register a team of five. The challenge starts September 13 for one month. You can register via the Kindful registration page (details are in the article below) with a small fundraising fee of HK$500 per person (HK$2,500 per team). Fancy competing against your colleagues and form more teams internally to challenge each other within your corporate? The Kindful platform has a dedicated Peer2Peer module to facilitate this and reach an even wider network for your fundraising efforts. As a team, you are invited to accumulate and log the number of hours gained through activity during the month. Details to log hours will be sent nearer the time and via a platform called ChallengeHound.

If you are thinking you are not that sporty or need to perform high energy activities, then fear not as the challenge is open to all abilities and is inclusive of anyone, any age, doing any activity. Now is the time for change. With brilliant prizes for the top three teams from Joint Dynamics and Lululemon, in addition to more prizes for ‘fun challenge winners’ during the event, there is every reason to support this event with RUN.

Has that inner motivational voice appeared? See you at the starting line...

Uniting Across Differences as a Community
RUN work towards a future where refugees are integrated with the local community and respected and treated as equals. Understanding Menopause and Andropause: August 25
Understanding Menopause and Andropause: August 25
With an aging population and the increasing retirement age, it is important for employers to provide care for their employees. Although there is no statutory retirement age in Hong Kong, the Government has taken the lead to extend the retirement age of civil servants to 60-65, depending on the grade and year of entry.

Over the next decade, the number of Gen Z employees is estimated to triple and the workplace has been adjusting to accommodate this transition but are we doing enough for our aging population? To shed light on this issue, WiFA is hosting an informative discussion on menopause and andropause -- definitions, symptoms, causes, and treatments.

Menopause and Andropause are transitions to a new phase of life for women and men respectively as they enter late 40s and may continue for many years. Changes during this time can lead to mood swings, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and related symptoms. Understanding how to navigate through this complex maze can help women and men deal with the symptoms they are experiencing.

Womenomics – The Advancement of the Economics
Womenomics – The Advancement of the Economics
The concept of “Womenomics”, introduced in the Japanese government eight years ago, aims to increase the female workforce participation rate through diversity-promoting policies within the government and corporations. To enhance female representation at all levels, the government encourages the advancement of the female workforce to address the shrinking labor force, while the corporate world accommodates employees for more family-friendly policies.
Yet, less than 10% of CEOs in the world are women, so what progress have we have made thus far? How do we promote more opportunities for female leaders? What are the major concerns that cause women to leave the workforce? More importantly, what are the plausible solutions?
WiFA and the Asia Society are partnering together to hold a virtual event to address the topic of Womenomics. Events details coming soon.

Male Allies: Supporting Women in Finance: September & October
Male Allies: Supporting Women in Finance: September & October
Earlier this year, we honoured and celebrated the amazing women who work in our financial services community through the WiFA 2021 Spotlight Interview Series. Now, WiFA would like to shine a spotlight on our male allies during the month of September & October.
What is a male ally? They’re defined as men who support, mentor, and promote women. In today’s environment, we are conscious of the powerful impact that male allies can have both in and outside of the workplace, and their critical role in gender equality initiatives. This study by the Boston Consulting Group showed that when men are actively involved in gender inclusion programs, 96% of organizations see progress whereas companies where men are not involved, only 30% show progress.
WiFA’s goal with the male ally series is to share stories on how the men we work with support and uplift female colleagues to build a more inclusive, intelligent, and efficient workplace.

Please reach out to Bonnie Ohri at bonnie.ohri@wifasia.org to nominate a male ally that you feel has provided exceptional support to a woman in finance.
